Roles
beeThere is a pair of night lamps that allows virtual communication between children and their parents. The lamps offer children a sense of comfort, encourage independency and allow both children and parents to feel at ease in their sleep.
The design challenge was to develop a new product for EcoBee with a strong understanding of their company’s principles, target consumers, thus, seeking opportunities for growth.

The Design Process
Understanding EcoBee's
values and goals
Based on the info we gathered from our primary and secondary research, we constructed our personas
The Malbas Family
A family of 5, soon to be 6, who have recently moved into a bigger living space. Their son and daughter have just started primary school and they are all looking forward to welcome their youngest.
The house has 2 floors, the living area and 2 kid bedrooms on the ground floor and their parents’s room upstair. As exciting as it may sound, the Malbas are concerned that bigger house calls for far more responsibility.
How do I easily baby proof this house without effecting the way other children use the house?
Will the children be comfortable sleeping in their own rooms?
Are the home appliances installed properly and safe to use?
How do I know what the children are doing when I’m downstairs?
How do I get the children involved in caring for the house?
How do I keep this house healthy and friendly?
We are going to be spending so much more money now.
More bills to take care of...hydros, internet, house maintenance, etc.
What will this house be like in the winter? frozen pipes?!
Who will care for the children when I’m out?
Children tend to be afraid of the dark, a fear that may persist into adulthood. Many parents resolve to go to their room or having them sleep in their parents room or simply keep the lights on, which adds more to their energy bills.
Problem of Interest
How might we ease a parent’s concern over their child comfort and safety, at the same time, easing a child’s fear of the dark?
Scenarios
Children are afraid of going to the washroom alone at night.
Children experience discomfort in their sleep due to temperature change or sickness
Children are having nightmare and want comfort
Parents want to be informed of their children’s location
Parents want to be informed of their children’s condition when they are sick.
The Design Proposal
A product compatible with the ecoBee3 thermostat which regulates room temperature for both parents and children based on their sleeping behaviour or patterns.
A pair of night lamps that ease children’s fear of the dark while keeping parents informed about the child’s behaviour at night. They each have their own lamp. The parents lamp acts as the main console that monitors the children’s lamps and communicates with them through the use of light. The children, through their own lamp that includes a wearable, are empowered to overcome their fear of the dark while being tracked on their parents console.
How does it work?
When parents are awake and children are falling asleep, the light is lit brightly to create a presence in their room.
When both parents and the child are asleep, the light is dimmed
When the children wake to go to the washroom at night, the parents’ console sends a calming glow to their lamp or their wearable
Each child may choose their own colour for distinction and personalization.
